REFLECTIONS

FROM THE HEART

The LOOPS organization was recently honored on April 20, 2018, in Austin, Texas by receiving the “23rd Annual Governor’s Criminal Justice Volunteer Service Award” for the “Best Family Program”.  Those accepting the award were Derek McCammon, President; Linda Maples, Executive Director; and Rick and Sandra Connell, Board member. What an honor to receive this award and be presented with two beautiful plaques. This was such a great tribute to Leland. Leland went home to be with the Lord on June 14, 2017, but we continue on. Below is the most of the write-up that was in the program that day; 20 awards were presented to ministries all over the state of Texas. Leland and Linda founded LOOPS in 1989. LOOPS is a non-denominational, non-profit, religious organization dedicated to the support and restoration of prisoners and their families through the gospel of Jesus Christ. The transformational leadership ministry specializes in re-entry services for ex- offenders and the families of current offenders.  LOOPS provides a support program on Thursdays at Life Change Baptist Church called the REC-Room (Re-Entry Chapel). LOOPS discovered that while many ex- offenders found their faith in prison, but when released they did not know where or how to find a church and support. Along with help in finding the gospel and fellowship, LOOPS provide community service through assistance with obtaining employment opportunities, vocational training, transportation, housing, eyeglasses and more. Since most of the new Christians were not from church backgrounds, they had no idea of what to look for in a church. With the help of ex-offenders and free-world volunteers, LOOPS started a weekly meeting that was to be a bridge to local churches.  Leland recruited many volunteers to help carry the message to these families. Friend, Rick Connell was one of LOOPS volunteers. Leland and Rick began teaching a class, which Leland wrote, called “From Garbage to Gems.  This faith-based curriculum leads the participant to make cognitive changes in his or her attitudes and manner of thinking. They are challenged to go (FROM GARBAGE to GEMS) and transform negative and destructive attitudes such as Guilt, Anger, Resentment, Bitterness, Attitude, Greed, Envy (GARBAGE) into (GEMS) God, Eternity, Mediator, Saviour. Participants identify their issues and solutions through the character and grace of God. Leland served in many areas of prison ministry for over 30 years until his death in June of 2017.  Linda and the many volunteers continue “Mending Broken Hearts through Jesus Christ, our Lord.”  For all of this LOOPS received the award for Best Family Program.

REC-ROOM MESSAGES ON THE INTERNET

In 2003 we began a weekly meeting we called the REC-Room (REC meaning Re-Entry Chapel.)  Through the LOOPS in-prison seminars we learned that many people who became Christians in prison were prone to return to the old life after being released.  Since most of the new Christians were not from church backgrounds, they had no idea of what to look for in a church.  With the help of some ex-inmates we started a weekly meeting that was to be a bridge to local churches.  The meeting consists of refreshments, music, a speaker and fellowship.  Along with presenting the gospel, we worked at finding employment opportunities, vocational training, transportation and financial assistance. Northside Bible Church in Oklahoma City asked us to tape these programs and they are now placing them on their website, RightDivision.com.  You can find the programs under the Leland Maples Audio Lessons link: https://rightdivision.com/contributors/leland- maples/lessons and at https://vimeo.com/channels/loopsministry
